Did You Know?
The Jolly Roger
is the name given to any of the
flags flown to
identify a ship as pirate. The flag was flown to strike
terror in the hearts of the
pirates' intended victims. The name is thought to have come from Joli Rouge (pretty red), a satirical French description of the bloody banner flown by early
privateers. The skull and
crossbones motif appeared around 1700 in the Caribbean.
Our logo is a modified version of
the flag Jack Rackham flew after
turning pirate shortly after his
election as captain of the warship
Neptune.
Rackham, also
known as Calico Jack for the
bright clothing he wore, was
caught near Port Royal, Jamaica
and hung as a deterrent at
Deadman's Cay.
Deadman's Cay was later named
Rackham's Cay.
